Intended for the hills, the new lightweight Shimano Ultegra WH-R8170 C36-TL Carbon Disc Road Wheelset brings modern road tubeless design, low-mid profile carbon rims and disc braking to your road bike. The 36mm depth rim does more to cut through wind than our training wheels while the carbon construction easily supports tires up to 38mm in width.
The new Ultegra carbon disc wheel release consisting of the C36, C50, and C60 wheelsets was created to compliment Shimano's new 12-speed groupset but is conveniently reverse-compatible with Shimano's 11-speed as well, providing maximum flexibility across a wider range of drivetrains.

It's a work in progress for me on whether I like these wheels or not. There does feel to be an aero gain on the roads compared to my previous carbon wheelset. I can see a 2mph uptick on the flat roads. However, on rougher roads, the ride is pretty harsh compared to my previous wheelset. I may have to play with tire pressure because internal rim wide has made the tires measure wider and I can drop a few psi. The big disappointment is crosswinds. It's pretty windy where I live and despite claims, the wheels are pretty prone to jerking the wheel from under me in a gust. The wheels have made my bike more nervous on the road.
These wheels at 15 months are perfect. I have run through a set of Schwalbe TLEs in 30 and now have Conti GP 5000 S TRs in 32 for all road. They set up perfect with Stans Sealant and hold air ok, maybe loose 10 PSI a week if idle. No flats yet either, (knock on wood). At 36 mm they spin up nice and fast and are solid on steep descents and easy to control in our mountain cross winds. I also have the new Dura-Ace wheelset that feature the 12 speed only hub in 36 mm profile, I use with 28 mm Conti GP 5000 S TRs. Both sets I use 12 speed Ultegra Cassettes 11-34. At first I was uncertain why I had to adjust the rear mech position in eTubes app from -7 to -11 with the Ultegra set. I found that I was best with -7 on the T2 indoors as well. I added 2 micro spacers behind the Ultegra freehub and the cassette now sits the same distance from edge of lockout as the DA set so I dont have to make setting changes when changing wheel sets. I thought I should share this. In terms of ride performance between the Ultegra and Dura Ace, you will appreciate the improved freehub mechanism but wont notice a difference in the rest of the wheels. The tire difference is obvious as well. I was glad to get great member pricing on both sets and look forward to years of serviceability and excellent ride quality.
They call this 36mm size a climbing wheel, but with big Midwest crosswinds here, these wheels are the perfect choice for all around riding too. Light and fast on the transitions and rock solid. I ride 130 to 170 miles a week, and these wheels have livened up my solo workouts and group rides. I also use them on gravel running 32mm Continental 5000 TR tires at 50psi. These wheels are the perfect blend of size, quality and appearance (the subtle graphics really pop with transparent tires). I expect to be riding these wheels for many years.
