Bought my 1040 Solar with a black Friday sale. Got a good deal on it. Been using it since. So far so good.
I cannot say anything bad about it. It navigates just find, I created a few test rides then went out and rode the routes. Navigated just fine with no guess work as to which way to go. Large screen with little pictures that pop p when it is time to make a turn.
Blue tooth to phone just fine. One must download the Garmin Express app to phone plus I have Garmin Express on my home computer.
I only have to plug it in for charging about once a week but I store it on the window sill in the sun light.
I say if you can work it into your budget, go for it.
I like every thing about my new 840. It's got so many features I initially had to turn some off or I'd be overloaded with too much data. It's quite an improvement from my 520+ which wasn't holding enough of a charge for long rides. i like the longer battery life and now find I only need to charge it after 3 or 4 rides. The only negative is that the buttons don't seem to engage after clicking them so sometimes I need to hit them more than once.
This is my 3rd Garmin bike PC. Needed to upgrade from 5-year old Edge 520. Buttons were disintegrating, falling out, and frequently losing connectivity with cadence sensor & heart rate monitory on Garmin Venu 2 Plus watch. Didn't want to spend a lot of $, as use Bike PC for principally for display of data, and rely upon Garmin watch to upload ride data to Strava. Edge 540 fit the bill. Not too expensive. Meets all my requirements. Still learning to use new functions.
Garmin has responded to ongoing criticism regarding the outdated appearance of its display technology by introducing significant upgrades in its devices. Following the successful implementation of vibrant and responsive AMOLED displays in various Garmin watches, the Edge series is now receiving similar enhancements, beginning with the Garmin Edge 1050. This model features an impressive 1,000nit display that rivals the responsiveness of modern smartphones, while also offering superior battery longevity.
In addition to the upgraded display, the Edge 1050 incorporates a range of new features designed to enhance group riding experiences and engage with the broader cycling community, including a crowdsourced system for identifying road hazards. Notably, the device includes a well-executed bike bell feature. Furthermore, Garmin has made substantial improvements to its gradient responsiveness and other performance algorithms.
